In July of 1986, I took my learner’s permit for a literal spin by helping drive our Winnebago from California to Michigan. Late on our second day, after a quick stop for Mom’s spaghetti dinner, Dad took over the driving.
A two-lane highway in eastern Colorado is extremely dark at night. It’s likely the oncoming driver was trying to help, but the flash of high beams had the opposite effect. Dad was momentarily blinded—and a 15,000-pound RV can’t stop on a dime.
Hitting the cow sent us flying across the sand and sagebrush. Looking back, the high beams were a blessing. If dad had swerved, we probably would have toppled over and been injured—or worse.
I’m sharing this story because our country is facing a growing number of challenges that seem to come out of nowhere.
Like a cow on the road, dealing with Covid, tariffs, inflation, layoffs and other unexpected hurdles is best done head on. It might mean a cow-shaped dent in our society, but we’ll eventually get past these problems—and have a story to tell.
