“Mamma mia, here I go again!” Friendship, love and empowerment. A fever dream of ABBA’s music.

This is what audience members can look forward to at “Mamma Mia!” — Fountain Valley High School Theatre’s upcoming lively and entertaining stage musical production.

This spring production is following FVHS Theatre’s previous production of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” in the winter.

Written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, “Mamma Mia!” is a musical set on a Greek island paradise and based on music produced by the band ABBA.

“Mamma Mia!” first premiered in the Prince Edward Theatre in London in 1999. The show later expanded to Broadway and Toronto, with shows in more than 40 countries in five continents. The stage musical was later adapted into a movie in 2008, along with a sequel in 2018.

The story focuses on Sophie Sheridan, a bride-to-be, accompanied by her mother, Donna Sheridan. After reading her mother’s diary, she learns about three men, all of whom have the potential of being her father. Each of the three men represent different stages of Donna’s life, with different personalities and characteristics.

Sophie invites them to the island with the hopes of identifying her father. The catch? Sophie only has a short amount of time before the wedding.

In the process, Donna reconnects with her three former lovers, along with reconciling with her best friends.

“We have rehearsals four times a week, with the occasional weekend rehearsal,” sophomore Addison Phan, who plays Sophie Sheridan, said. “Each day focuses on something different — blocking, dancing and singing until we can start running through the act.”

Shows will run April 23-27. Starting in April, tickets will be sold online at fvhstheatre.com. Additional information regarding ticket prices and locations will be released on the website.

“People should come watch ‘Mamma Mia!’ because it is a super fun show, and you will have a great time,” senior Bailey Curtis, who plays Donna Sheridan, said. “We are working really hard, so please come see the show at the end of April.”

“If you’re looking for something fun and nostalgic this April, seeing our show is definitely something to look forward to,” Phan added. “We’re so excited to finally lift the curtains and show you what we’ve been working on.”
