FROM GOGGLES TO GREATNESS: ONE WOMAN’S UNBELIEVABLE SWIM JOURNEY

Need a book to meet your New Year's Resolution to read more? Or a book club suggestion? Or just a good nonfiction read?

Let me introduce you to a local superhuman, an extraordinary swimmer, and an inspirational writer and speaker: Lynne Cox.

The author of “Swimming to Antarctica” epitomizes what it means to overcome obstacles. And you can meet her March 14 at the Huntington Beach Huntington Beach Public Library.

The beginning of the new year always comes with the motto: “New Year, New You.” For Cox, however, life is not about reinventing yourself, but about believing in yourself.

Cox was not your typical swimmer: No 50- or 100-meter race could satisfy her thirst for swimming. Instead, she satiated that appetite by swimming the English Channel at the age of 16 and breaking records across the world.

In a time when so many would give up, Cox overcomes. Her candid remarks throughout the book echo the same thoughts anyone would have, prolific swimmer or not. At times she wonders if she can do it or if she should just give up. But she always digs deep into herself and finds the will to go on.

From swimming through treacherous Egyptian waters to enduring the freezing ocean, Cox gives insight into the life of an extreme athlete driven by positivity and self-belief.

As a guest of the HBReads program, Cox will speak at the Huntington Beach Public Library, 525 Main Street, on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The HBReads annual reading program promotes diversity and awareness while teaching us about the world around us. We strive to bring a book to Huntington Beach that has the potential to create community discussion, community education, and community action. We believe through reading and literacy, we can become more enlightened about who we are, more understanding of our differences, and more determined to change the behaviors that drive us apart. We believe in a Huntington Beach that is all-inclusive and focused on a future that encourages our citizens to read, think, discuss, act. We are HBReads.
