Tragic Moments

Like a lot of people my age, I remember specifically where I was and what I was doing when the planes hit the towers.

My parents had a similar experience with JFK as did their parents with Pearl Harbor, and so on.

In a perfect world, happy events like curing polio, landing on the moon, or winning Olympic gold would have a greater impact on our lives than a tragedy like 9/11. Unfortunately, that’s not

the case. I know where I was when Columbia exploded but have no clue when Michael Phelps won his 28th medal.

Tragedies shape our lives and the effect is even more profound for those who experience them firsthand. This month’s cover story about the 9/11 recovery and its legacy is a good example. It’s one thing to feel remorse from a video or an article, but it’s completely different for first responders who were covered in the dust of what were once the tallest buildings in the world.

As the 23rd anniversary approaches, please keep the friends/ family of the people who died in the attack as well as those who are still dealing with the aftereffects in your thoughts and prayers.
