What if you reconnect with your loved ones’ past through the world of a fantasy roleplay game?
When Agnes loses her sister in a car crash, she has to grapple with the reality that she may never be able to connect with Tilly again. That’s until Agnes finds Tilly’s old journal, a collection of the thoughts from a 15-year-old Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast.
For their fall production, this is the world Fountain Valley High School Theatre program is exploring as part of She Kills Monsters: Young Adventures Edition, an emotional drama and comedy story about the bonds and connections forged between teenagers through the world of Dungeons and Dragons.
First written by Qui Nguyen in 2011, the original production of She Kills Monsters made its debut at The Flea Theater in New York City and has been performed over 800 times at the high school and college levels — including an adapted version for youth that the FVHS Theatre will be producing.
“This show has been my dream show for two years, and I am really excited for the audience to experience all the effort my castmates and I have put into this production,” senior Alex Oberg, who plays the lead role of Anges Evans, said.
Students in the program have the opportunity to participate in both the on-stage and off-stage aspects of the production, with some taking on acting roles and supplemental roles in make-up, rehearsals and set design. Rehearsals have been occurring Tuesday through Friday since September, with the occasional weekend rehearsal.
“I wanted to thank our cast, crew, parent volunteers and our amazing directors,” freshman and Stage Manager Katie Peters said. “[I’ve] only been doing tech for a short amount of time, [but] I am very grateful our directors trust me enough to give me the special role as one of the stage managers.”
“What audience members can expect is to be swept off their feet by the performance and the handy talented work of our crew,” junior Kendall Hester, who plays Tilly Evans, added. “Our team strives for every performance to welcome new people, so I would hope that our audience would be impressed and amazed about the show.”
Potential audience members should be advised that there will be some mature themes, violence and language as part of the production.
There will be showings of the production from Nov. 6 to 9 at FVHS Theatre’s Blackbox. Additional information for showtimes and ticket purchases can be found online at fvhstheatre.com.
