Soccer Saturdays

One of the best parts of being a dad is spending time with your kids. My screensaver is constantly reminding me of swings and slides, merry-go-rounds, beach days, and countless other events from when they were little.

Looking back, the memories which mean the most are those where I was actively involved. For example, both girls played AYSO for several years and I was their coach.

The obligation to attend every practice and game was sometimes a drag, especially on cold, wet Saturday mornings. But, as my daughters get older and need me less and less, it’s those shared experiences I remember the most. Setting up goals, running drills and yelling, “BIG KICK” at the top of my lungs are as clear today as they were a decade ago.

This month’s cover story is about a group of women who undoubtedly attended every practice, rain or shine, and became some of the best soccer players in the world. We have attended several Angel City games over the past two years and they are always a blast.

My daughters may have moved on to swim team, water polo and other activities, but soccer still holds a place in their hearts. I like to think their coach had something to do with that.
