ANGEL CITY FC IS TAKING SOCCER TO NEW HEIGHTS

Body

If you’re a fan of professional soccer, there are at least three top-level professional teams that call Los Angeles home. The newest and most exciting is Angel City Football Club, which plays in the National Women’s Soccer League.

The NWSL has 14 teams. The league was formed in November 2012 and is owned by the teams and sanctioned by the U.S. Soccer Federation.

The league includes teams from across the United States, from Los Angeles to New York, Chicago to Orlando. In 2020, the league expanded to include several new teams, among them Angel City, which plays its home games at BMO Stadium.

Since its inception, Angel City has led attendance not just in the NWSL but in women’s sports globally, according to the club’s website. In its inaugural season, the club sold out four games and averaged a league-leading 18,534 fans during the regular season. The 2024 season featured four sellouts, with an average attendance of 19,313.

The team’s inaugural game took place April 29, 2022, a 2-1 win against the North Carolina Courage in front of a sold-out crowd of 22,000. On the field, Angel City FC surpassed all previous expansion teams in 2022 with an eighth-place finish out of 12 teams, winning eight games and earning 29 points—just four points out of a playoff spot.

In its second season, after a rocky start, the club made a coaching change halfway through the season and went on to make the playoffs. Angel City became just the third NWSL expansion team to advance to postseason play within its first two seasons.

Angel City hopes to bounce back from a tough 2024 season, which ended with a losing record.

The team’s optimism for 2025 was boosted in February with the re-signing of goalkeeper Angelina Anderson, who agreed to a threeyear extension through 2028.

Anderson was originally selected by Angel City 27th overall in the second round of the 2023 NWSL Draft.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to stay in L.A. for the next four years,” Anderson said on the Angel City website. “This team, this community, this place has become home for me. I’m excited for the future of this club and where we are headed.”

Angel City FC sporting director Mark Parsons added: “Angelina is one of the most promising young goalkeepers in this league, and we are excited that she has committed to stay with us for several more years. It is critical that we continue to invest in talent on the field but also high character. Angelina is a special teammate for this group, and I believe she can become an important leader.”

Angel City kicked off the 2025 season by hosting the San Diego Wave FC at BMO Stadium.

The team will have two threegame homestands during the league’s 26-game schedule: May 24 (Racing Louisville FC), June 7 (Chicago

Carolina Courage).

The second homestand will see Angel City hosting the Kansas City Current on Oct. 6, the Houston Dash on Oct. 12 and Portland Thorns FC on Oct. 19.

The team is led by interim coach Sam Laity, who spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach with OL Reign. He also coached the Houston Dash in 2022-23.
