Middle school chess tournament is May 3
The fourth annual Fountain Valley School District Middle School Chess Tournament will take place at Fulton Middle School on Saturday, May 3.
Four timed rounds will begin at 10 a.m. as students from Fulton and Masuda middle schools compete in beginning, intermediate and advanced categories. The Fountain Valley Chess Club will officiate.
Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category. This year’s theme is astronomy in honor of Astronomy Day, which also falls on May 3.
Rotary accepting scholarship applications
The Fountain Valley Rotary Club is accepting applications for student volunteer scholarships. To qualify, a student must be at least a junior in high school and have completed volunteer service in their school or community.
Scholarships will be awarded at the FV Rotary Ed Arnold Volunteer of the Year Service Awards dinner on Sept. 13.

Memorial Day ceremony is May 26
The city of Fountain Valley and the Fountain Valley Community Foundation will partner with the West Orange County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary 9557 to present the annual Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday, May 26.
The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park, 17635 Los Alamos St.

Seniors Spring Fiesta is May 20
The Center at Founders Village Senior and Community Center will host its Spring Fiesta senior luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 20.
Tickets are $7. The center is located at 17967 Bushard St.
