Fountain Valley is home to one of the region’s most popular running spots: Mile Square Park. It’s also home to Esteban Prado, a standout long-distance runner with big goals.

Prado, 25, has won the Surf City Half Marathon the past three years. In 2026, he finished the half marathon in 1:06:20.

He has been running for about 10 years and competed for Fountain Valley High School as a senior. Coaches there still speak highly of him.

Barons track coach Steven Knowles said Prado “was one of the fastest runners in our school’s history. I always thought his potential was almost unlimited. His work ethic was unmatched.”

Another former coach, Brian Bivens, said Prado “represents everything a coach hopes for: discipline, humility, commitment. He chased improvement every day, lifted teammates when they struggled and competed with joy. I loved having him on the team.”

I asked Mr. Prado a few questions to learn more.

Q: What got you interested in becoming a long-dis tance runner?

A: I got interested after trying different sports and seeing that I enjoyed running the most. I realized that I was doing well in running long distance and it felt good afterwords. I felt accomplished and developed a camaraderie with my team. Running long distances with teammates made it that much more enjoyable. Running has become a part of my life, and I run daily for my health and to reach my goals.

Q: How do you train for your races? A: I incorporate healthy meals, including almond butter, fruits, protein and pasta. I also plan how many miles I will run daily, depending on the race. Sometimes I race half or full marathons. I also rest and spend time with my family, so I don’t think solely about the race. Incorporating rest is also essential.

Q: What has helped you be so successful when run ning the HB Half Marathon?

A: The preparation, my faith in God, and support from my family have helped me succeed. I also appreciate all the cheers from spectators; they especially help

Q: What are your future goals/dreams with regards to running?

A: I want to keep running, hoping to continue improving and see how far it will take me.

Q: Do you have any advice to give to those wanting to run half marathons or marathons?

A: To believe in yourself and work hard. Even when it gets tough, keep going and it will feel good when you accomplish it. You never know what you can achieve unless you try and work hard.

Esteban receives so much great support from his family, church and from the people of Fountain Valley. His mother, Susie, says “We love the city. It’s nice to be representing the city.” That support has helped Esteban in so many ways from running the LA Marathon recently to being photographed and recorded by the clothing company, Represent.

From training and running in Mile Square Park to competing on the biggest stages, Esteban Prado always competes at a high level.
