HB Reads One Book would like to share this year’s book selection: “Escape from Camp 14,” written by Blaine Harden. The author details one man’s journey from North Korea to freedom.

Shin Dong-Hyuk was born Shin in Guen at the Kaechon Internment Camp. He escaped from Camp 14 in 2005. The North Korean government told Shin he was imprisoned because his parents had committed crimes against the state.

Shin attended primary and secondary school while a camp prisoner. He was primarily a laborer.

In January 2015, Shin contacted Blaine Harden and provided his story, which accounts Shin’s journey in Blaine Harden’s book, “Escape from Camp 14.” Harden’s book reveals the exposure to torture that Shin was subjected to and how it affected his life.

Blaine Harden will be HB Reads’ featured author in 2025. He will speak at the HB Library’s Main Street branch at 525 Main St. on March 20. There will be a silent auction event from 4-6 p.m. with an open presentation and discussion at 7 p.m. Visit www.hbreads.org for details.
