In our ever-changing landscape, one organization has consistently stepped up to address the diverse and dynamic needs in Orange County’s 34 cities. For more than 100 years, Orange County United Way has been dedicated to building stronger communities and creating brighter futures for all.
Despite the affluence often attributed to Orange County, our region faces a housing crisis and a skyrocketing cost of living. Acutely aware of these challenges, this local nonprofit adapts and innovates to ensure that no one gets left behind.
With a deep understanding of the community, OC United Way has pivoted its programs and initiatives to meet the most pressing challenges.
'We recognize that the needs of our community are constantly evolving, and it's our responsibility to be nimble and responsive,' said Susan B. Parks, president and CEO of Orange County United Way.
Through its key initiatives — United for Student Success, United for Financial Security and United to End Homelessness — the nonprofit works to equip local students with opportunities for success, to empower families to build financial security and to ensure that our unhoused neighbors find a safe place to call home.
The organization also offers vital support via 2-1-1 Orange County (211OC), which connects thousands of residents to essential health and human services resources when they need it most.
From July of 2023 to June of 2024, 211OC received 2,065 calls from Fountain Valley. That is an average of 5 of our neighbors in crisis reaching out for help each day.
“211OC is a true lifeline,” said Parks. OC United Way has developed innovative strategies to address community issues — such as its WelcomeHomeOC housing navigation and landlord incentive program, which has helped house more than 1,100 people experiencing homelessness.
The nonprofit is also empowering underemployed and unemployed adults to secure livable-wage jobs through its UpSkill OC program. And its e-Mentorship program provides high school seniors with resources and mentoring needed to graduate on time, prepared for college, career and life.
United Way encourages residents to get involved — whether it's volunteering time, donating funds or advocating for important social issues.
'Our community is at its strongest when we all come together to uplift one another,' Parks said. 'By joining forces with OC United Way, residents can play a vital role in shaping a more equitable and resilient future in their neighborhood.'
