Plavan crossing guard helps students survive wet day

One cold, wet, winter’s day, an ordinary school crossing guard transformed into a superhero for dozens of kids at Plavan Elementary School. On Feb. 1, which at the time was recognized as the wettest day of 2024, crossing guard Cuong Tran picked up every student crossing flooded Warner Avenue to keep the kids’ shoes and feet fromgetting drenched. They potentially would have had to endure a long day of school with wet socks and shoes.

Tran, himself, wore the same pair of shoes all day, and they were not rain boots. He sacrificed his own comfort so the kids could have a comfortable day at school. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed, particularly on social media.

Debbie Weed-Truong commented, “He is so kind and happy and waves at everyone.” Santi Rodriguez added, “He is always so friendly and upbeat.” Christina Belcastro also commented, “Can someone find out his shoe size…I would buy him rain boots.” And Long Liu wrote, “I love that guy. Where is the GoFundMe? Let’s send him something nice.”

After the comments were shared with Tran the next day, he said, “I am so appreciative of all the love and support from the community, but I respectfully decline any funds or gifts. I would do this job for free.”
