MIDDLE SCHOOL CHESS TOURNAMENT FEATURES ALL THE RIGHT MOVES

Fulton Middle School hosted the third annual Fountain Valley School District Middle School Chess Tournament May 4. A total of 22 students from Fulton and Masuda schools participated.

Players are members of the chess clubs at each school. The chess clubs meet weekly and are run by librarians Stephanie Miller (Masuda) and Karlyna Macey (Fulton).

Students could compete in beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and played 4 rounds, and the top three in each level received a trophy. Fourth-place winners received a chess workbook. Non-trophy winners received a medal for participating, and every player received a certificate and a chess piece keyring courtesy of the Fountain Valley Chess Club.

In honor of May 4, the theme for the tournament was Star Wars, including cardboard cutouts, balloons and cupcakes.

Intermediate: (1) Jaiden Grajeda, (2) Tiger Tu, (3) Remington Santana and (4) Kang Phan.

Beginner: (1) Noah Shoemaker, (2) Andrew Ibarra, (3) Donovan Melad and (4) Sydney Mach.

Additional tournament players: Ayla Balat, Alexis Lam, Hunter Lam, Adam Lien, Peter Mendoza, Marcos Nguyen, Remy Phan, Adam Sea, Muhammad Said Shafoat and Alex Tran.
