MOVING KIDS TO COLLEGE

Moving a child to college for the first time is a huge transition in unexpected ways. It’s a tremendous undertaking, mentally, physically, and emotionally.

For many students, college is the first time they get to live by themselves for the first time. No house rules, no curfews, and no one reminding them to pick up their dirty clothes.

For parents, moving a child to college is about much more than logistics and packing lists. It’s a milestone and the culmination of all the effort in nurturing a child from birth to almost adulthood. It’s a major emotional transition for families.

Leave space to be kind and compassionate to yourself. Watching a child leave home can bring a mix of emotions, ranging from joy and excitement to grief and sadness.

DORM ROOMS CAN MEAN NEW HOME AND NEW FAMILY

The logistics can seem like moving into an entirely new home, except that “home” is usually half of a dorm room with a communal bathroom down the hall shared by dozens of your child’s newly adopted “siblings.”

What’s marvelous about college is that kids get to live with other young people their own age. Hopefully, they’ll develop lifelong bonds they never could’ve imagined. In many ways, they’ll be growing up together as they mature from teenagers to adults.
