I Wear a Lot of Hats

I frequently tell people, “I wear a lot of hats.” Usually in response to a call or email I have been slow in responding to. It’s an excuse, but it’s also true, both figuratively and literally. I’m a husband, father, brother, HOA board member, president of two swim teams and a small business owner. Somehow, I also find time to care for an aging parent, tinker on my truck and attempt basic home repair. I don’t think I have more responsibilities than anyone else, it just feels that way sometimes.

The literal hats hang on a hook in my closet. They include an Angels cap I wear when coaching adult softball at Mile Square Park, the final table cap from this year’s HBPCF poker tournament, and my favorite, from the first camping trip Anne and I took shortly after we were married. Somehow that last one is now 20 years old and looks it.

This month’s cover story is about another man who has worn a lot of hats in his life. Jim Tucker was helping save lives before most of us were even born. Earning $5 per day, he saved beachgoers from riptides and drownings. After volunteering for WWII, Jim worked a variety of jobs around HB including a dairy, the post office, and the bowling alley. His story is inspirational and I’m glad we can bring it to you.
