Slices of Life

When I was a kid, the only family members we had nearby were my mom’s parents who lived in Escondido. Some holidays, we would drive down to their house for dinner. For others, they would drive up to ours.

Regardless of who was hosting and whether it was turkey, ham or a third option, the one constant of holiday dinners was pie. It was a tradition that my grandpa and dad would drive my sister, my brother and me to either Polly’s or Marie Callender’s and we’d help pick two.

Depending on the time of year, we might come home with an apple, pumpkin, fresh peach or coconut cream. When I was little, the options seemed endless. More often than not, one of the pies would be German chocolate, since that’s my mom’s favorite.

Of course, we all had our favorites just as we all had flavors we wouldn’t eat. It was important to choose two pies that would satisfy the whole table. We had to have something for everyone.

The November issue of Fountain Valley Living is similar, with something for everyone. This month, we have a cover story about the annual Bell Game, John Etheridge, the New FVFD Fire Station, UCI’s Willed Body Program, Cars & Carbs, Daylight Saving Time, Walk for Hope OC and FVHS Theatre’s production of “She Kills Monsters.” We hope you enjoy these slices of life and have a Happy Thanksgiving..
