Shangri-la is a fictional place from a 1933 novel called “Lost Horizon.” The name has become synonymous with an unreachable, earthy paradise. But I disagree. I think we’ve already found it. When I was a teen, I told my dad I dreamed of a future working the lifts at Mammoth and skiing my days away.

As someone born in Depression-era Montana, my dad knew a lot about living in the cold. He gave me some of the best advice I ever received.

“Make enough money to live somewhere warm and visit the cold when you want to ski.”

As I write these words, it’s mid-December in Orange County and daytimes are in the 70s.

My daughters played a water polo game in an outdoor pool after we decorated the house for Christmas.

Sure, it’s cool in the evenings and Snow Summit is open for the season, but the tiny flowers on the seedlings in the field near Costco will soon become strawberries and I can wear shorts when mowing the lawn. I sure am glad we live in Shangri- Los Angeles.
