Fulton Middle School hosted the fourth annual Fountain Valley School District Middle School Chess Tournament on Saturday, May 3.
A total of 22 students from Fulton, Masuda and Talbert middle schools participated in the event. Most competitors are members of their school’s chess club, which meets weekly and is run by school librarians.
The tournament was officiated by the Fountain Valley Chess Club and members of the Fountain Valley High School Chess Club.
Players competed in four rounds across beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The top three players in each category received trophies. All other participants earned medals, and every student received a certificate.
This year’s theme was astronomy, in honor of National Astronomy Day, also celebrated on May 3. Trophy designs, balloons, decorations, and cupcakes featured astronomy-inspired elements.
