Gisler Elementary builds community through literacy

Gisler Elementary School’s second annual “One School, One Book” reading program has once again brought students, staff and families together on an adventurous journey — this year through the pages of 'Nim's Island' by Wendy Orr.

The reading initiative has transformed the quiet act of reading into a vibrant, community-wide event.

The program aims to foster a culture of literacy, connect families, enhance student engagement and involve various community elements in the educational process. Research that demonstrates the benefits of reading aloud to children, thereby enhancing their reading and cognitive skills, supports this approach.

The continuation and expansion of this program have been made possible through the generous support of grants from the Fountain Valley Schools Foundation, Gisler PTO, and Donors Choose.

The launch event was a live Zoom chat with author Wendy Orr. Students interacted directly with the author, asking questions and gaining insights that deepened their connection to the story. Orr also participated in a closing session to answer any lingering questions and celebrate the students’ journey through the book.

Weekly events such as 'Trivia Wednesdays' involved classroom teachers and School Resource Officer Fermin, who joined students and staff for a spirited quiz on the week’s reading. This not only reinforced the students' understanding of the material but also helped build stronger bonds between students and local law enforcement.

Parents have been enthusiastic about the impact of the program. Comments include: “My son, Finley, is absolutely loving this book. We have even gotten his 3-year-old brother into it. Fun for the whole family.'

Another parent added: 'We work many hours, and this book has brought us together to unwind and create a calm, relaxing way to close a day.“
